Kenya’s Certificate of Secondary Education 2020 results are out. After the usual jubilations and mixed emotions, thousands of students and their parents will be scratching their heads about careers and courses to undertake! What is the right career for me? This is a crucial question that every young adult must answer.
Looking at the search engine, this question pops up more than one thousand times! And when I typed the key words Career Quiz, I received more than 36,000,000 results! Wow! What insights do we get from here?
Career guidance is still a paradox not only to students, but to parents, teachers and the education stakeholders the world over. Very few people want to venture onto the unknown. They want to be sure that the career path they pursue is the correct one.
In 2020, over 700,000 students sat for KCSE. About 23% of these qualified to go the university, others qualified for different Technical and Vocational Education Training options while others will opt to go for other non-academic routes. It is not about what is available but what is line with their career interests, passion, values and abilities.
So that begs the question, is there a career that is right or wrong? Most of these quizzes can lead you to either the right career, the wrong one, or even leave you very confused.
It is universally accepted that proper guidance consists of:
(a) Helping the person to develop self-understanding - giving him information about himself so that he can form a realistic self-image.
(b) Helping him to understand his environment - giving him educational and occupational information as and when he needs it.
Every human being is unique and has a purpose in the world. For a career to be right for you, you need to ask yourself; What are my interests? What are my capabilities? What is my personality? What values do i hold dear? What are my strengths (innate or learned)?
Studies demonstrate that individuals whose interest matches with their career are more successful, comfortable and confident. They are more efficient in their work and display higher levels of motivation and satisfaction with their work.
