Many of us plan for weddings and holidays well in advance and down to the last detail, but few remember to accord their careers the same consideration? Many do not know the importance of career planning while others do not know where to start!
Career planning is a set of activities and actions which when undertaken allows for easier achievement of career goals. However, much unlike a wedding or holiday plan, it is a lifelong continuous process and not a one-time intervention.
With the world evolving and innovations constantly emerging, the labor market also demands vibrancy from old & new entrants. Like my father has always told us “If you fail to plan you plan to fail.”
The process of career planning MUST start with exploration of ones interests and abilities, setting career goals, designing action plans and learning the skills necessary to execute these strategic plans.
In direct words to make the endeavor simple and successful the key word will be: self-awareness. When working with a career counselor, mapping out a career plan is a manageable task; however, if undertaking this process as an individual without expert guidance it will be important to highlight the following:
· Strengths and weaknesses.
· Talents and abilities/disabilities.
· Passion and interests.
· Values, ethics and preferences.
· Learning and work options available to you.
Painting a picture of that future dream allows us to imagine it and bring it into reality. Hence we strive to learn as much as possible right now. Planning helps us target required skills, education requirements and networks in the present all the while not losing clear sight of the bigger picture.
Why not grow wings today and fly to your dream career? Avoid the large population of misaligned people, find yourself and get through the maze! Start by planning your career.
The process of career planning should be guided by the steps depicted below. Remember self knowledge should always be the first step of the journey.
1. KNOW YOURSELF
Interests, values, strengths and personal traits.
2. EXPLORE OPTIONS
Find out what is out there and requirements and trends.
3. MAKE DECISION
Make an informed choice on desired career path.
4. TAKE ACTION
Work towards career goal. Network, gain experience etc.
